Birthing Basics...
Well we survived our 9-5 class. We both have to say it was very informative, fun, and we are glad we went. Best of all we got to be in a class with people we know! We were walking into the hospital and who should pull up but our next door neighbor! They are expecting twins in April and we had no idea they were going to the class on the same day... We could've carpooled :D
In the beginning of class we had to introduce ourselves, tell when we were due, where we are having the baby (most of us in the hospital the class was in), and what we were having (if we knew). I ended up being the first due date in the class and my neighbor had the latest possible due date. There were only a couple February due dates, with the rest being mostly March and some April.
The class size was large with about 30 couples present and there were two instructors teaching the class. We watched three short videos throughout the day: one about natural labor, one about c-sections, and one about episiotomies. Nothing too graphic - meaning they didn't get an up close look at the baby coming out or them actually cutting for a c-section. The only graphic thing during the whole course was a flip book the one instructor used to show the steps of labor. The drawings were so good/graphic that you would have thought they were an actual photo.
We had a short session sitting on the floor with our pillows and blankets. We learned some breathing techniques and the guys gave the girls a massage. Of course Derrick had to be a smart ass and push some sensitive/ticklish spots on my back...
My favorite part of the class was towards the end when the guys had to pick an object out of this bag the instructors had and tell who it would be used on and where. I knew a lot of the stuff they presented. We also got to tour the nursery and see the little babies. The labor room was really nice with a boombox and TV in it in case you needed a distraction or some comforting music. We are glad we got to see where the labor/delivery rooms were because if we had come into the hospital cold we wouldn't have known where to go right away. We also turned our admissions information in so we don't have to worry about that when we get to the hospital.
The class made us more excited I think for the due date. :) We can't wait to see our little girl. I think it also made Derrick more aware of everything I'm going to be going through during the delivery (and how dilated a woman gets in labor - can we say ouch!) I had to laugh because my neighbor leaned over during class and whispered to me how she warned her husband to wear a cup that day when she was delivering.
